Seminar Particles at fluid-fluid interfaces: kinetics of adsorption and shape-directed assembly
Valeria Garbin

Details:

Surfactants are used in the preparation of emulsions and to stabilize foams and bubbles. Small solid particles can function in similar ways to surfactants, owing to the high energy of insertion into a fluid-fluid interface. In the first part of the talk I will provide a general background on the interfacial behavior of particles at low Bond number, and I will present initial results on the kinetics of nanoparticle adsorption in a pendant drop apparatus. In the second part of the talk I will show how capillary interactions can direct the assembly of anisotropically shaped particles.
