Seminar Traffic flows in confined geometries
Denis Bartolo

Details:

I will discuss the traffic dynamics of particles advected through model microfluidic geometries. A combination of recent experimental, and theoretical results will be introduced. Long-range hydrodynamics interactions build up between particles cruising in ordered obstacle networks, and in simple Hele-Shaw geometries. These interactions will be shown to be responsible for a wealth of collective traffic phenomena including the propagation of dispersive density waves, and the spontaneous formation of jams akin to the one observed in actual traffic flows.
